Activate America

Activate America

One of the most important health issues in the country today for Health Seekers is America’s epidemic of obesity and inactivity. Activate America is the YMCA’s bold approach to directly address our nation’s growing health crisis. Our mission compels us to transform the way we work, both internally and externally, to support all health seekers and communities in their pursuit of well-being in spirit, mind, and body.

As a part of the nation’s largest network of charitable, not-for-profit organizations focused on improving lifestyle health, the Killeen Armed Services YMCA has begun the process of addressing this growing healthy crisis. Our Activate America initiative is a continuing effort to keep families healthy. The YMCA is leading the way in promoting healthy living in the Central Texas Community.

Healthy Family Homes

The Killeen Armed Services YMCA is committed to helping families connect through family time, exercise and healthy eating habits. Healthy Family Home is the initiative to assist families in getting started. Through a comprehensive easy plan that the ASYMCA designed in conjunction with Eli Lilly Pharmaceuticals, families now have a direct support system to engage their families.

Who are Health Seekers?

Health Seekers are all children, youth, teens adults and families whose successful pursuit of health and well-being in spirit, mind, and body requires continuous, supportive relationships and environments. In short, they are people – children, youth, teens and adults – who try to live healthy lives but struggle to do so. Many parents of the children in the YMCA’s care are health seekers, and their children are, too. As an Activate America YMCA, we are committed to helping them succeed, which contributes to the overall health and well-being of our country.

Helping youth and families develop healthy lifestyles with physically active programs is a major component of the initiative, and has lead to the creation of new YMCA programs and collaborations with community-based partners.

• Healthy Kids Day – At the YMCA, we believe building healthy kids is about more than physical fitness. We look at the total person – spirit, mind and body – building character through our four core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility. YMCA Healthy Kids Day is part of YMCA Activate America® and is designed to help families adopt and sustain healthy lifestyles.

• Before and After School Childcare – The YMCA’s afterschool programs feature fun, new experiences and personal enrichment. Children are provided with opportunities to grow in the five core areas of Character and Leadership Development, Education and Character Exploration, Healthy and Life Skills, the Arts, and Sports and Fitness Recreation. In short, we help children to become successful in pursuit of health and overall well-being in spirit, mind, and body.

• Aquatics - The ASYMCA offers swim lessons as well as recreational swimming. Classes are taught by Red Cross certified instructors. The YMCA is proud of their history of being the premier aquatics program in the nation. In keeping with that tradition, we concentrate on not only skills development, but building self-esteem, confidence, and enhancement of quality of life.

• ASYMCA Fitness Facility – It’s all about family fitness at the Copperas Cove YMCA Family Center. The center is tailored to accommodate families, including a child watch program that allows parents to leave their children from 6 months to 6 years old while they work out. The fitness facility is equipped with stationary bikes, treadmills, elliptical machines, strength training machines, and free weights. A personal trainer is available to help health seekers through the equipment in order to ensure they use the machines safely and efficiently.

• Zumba - Zumba is a Latin-inspired, dance-fitness class. It’s fun, exciting, stress relieving, uplifting, energizing class that anyone can do. You don’t have to know how to dance to succeed at Zumba. It’s an effective, cardio-based workout with components of resistance/sculpting, calories-burning training to tone the entire body to help you achieve any desired goal.

• ShotoKan Karate – Teaches that improvements in character and mental discipline are as important as physical skill, if not more so. Shotokan Karate is meant to be accessible to all, including, women, children, and those without great athletic ability. Our Shotokan Karate Program offers a caring, safe environment where children and adults can learn the art of karate. Its practice leads to muscular and aerobic fitness, body alignment, balance and movement, increased perceptual awareness, stress management, concentration, confidence, and discipline.
