 Family Center

The YMCA has been providing leadership programs for teens for more than 100 years. A small group of teens working closely with an adult supervisor remains a successful format for helping young people reach their potential in spirit, mind, and body. Though the activities may have changed over the course of time, the goals remain the same. They are to provide youth/teens with opportunities for leadership training, personal growth, service to others, and social development.
Our community centers, child care programs, and program centers provide a Safe Haven. Programs such as computer labs and youth employment programs give participants the opportunity to develop marketable skills. A healthy start and relationship with a caring adult are created in our fitness programs, aquatic programs, youth sports programs, and camping and counselor in training (CIT) programs. We teach our youth to give back to the community through our Youth Advisory Committees, organized youth/teen clubs, and special holiday caring events.
The ASYMCA continues meeting the new challenges facing the youth of our community today. The Teen Center provides participants with an opportunity to "hangout" in a safe & fun environment with their friends (Safe Haven). The Center will be divided into different areas to provide a wide range of activities to meet the diverse needs of our youth.
Employment: the three teens centers are supervised by an Adult Program Director, but the remainder of the staff (front desk personnel, custodians, membership development, activities coordinators, fitness instructors, etc) are filled by teens. These positions, combined with the number of teens currently working for the ASYMCA in our child care development and AmeriCorps Youth Cors, make the ASYMCA the largest employer of teenagers in the Central Texas Area.
Game Room: has a variety of games such as - pool tables, ping pong, air hockey, foosball, board games (chess/checkers, Monopoly, Risk, etc), computer games, video games, etc. All gamers are free to participants.
Lounge/Library: is an area where the teens can have "rap" sessions, watch T.V., do homework (w/computers available), read, and/or just sit around and relax without the pressure to have to do anything. Sometimes youth/teens just need a place to think about things without the pressure of parents, friends, or peers.
Additional Programs: Youth and Government (hands on participation in the legal and judicial systems), Travel Series (trips to museums, theme parks, movies, etc), C.I.T. (Counselor In Training programs allow youth, ages 12-15, to develop job skills), Social Events (i.e. dances, dinners, luncheons), etc.
